Roger Lee Gaines, the youngest of the four sons born to the late James & Sarah
Gaines of Charlotte Courthouse, Virginia, peacefully departed this life surrounded by
his loved ones on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at his home in Louisa, VA.
Roger attended the public schools of Charlotte Courthouse. At the age of 18, he
moved to Charlottesville, VA and began pursuing his passion as a truck driver with
Virginia Industries for the Blind. After a one year engagement, Roger married the
love of his life Kimberly J. Walker of Madisonville, Virginia, on June 16, 1979 at the
home of the Rev. James R Williams who officiated the wedding. They were married
42 years and blessed with the birth of two daughters, Lorenda and Whitley.
In 1992, Roger started his own business, Gaines Trucking LLC, in Charlottesville. He
was in business for 25 years and drove a total of 42 years. He was better known as
"Deputy Dawg" amongst his trucking colleagues and to others in the industry he was
fondly known as "Big Dad"
Roger loved, served, and exemplified his intent to be a child of God throughout his
entire life. He was baptized at an early age at Roanoke Baptist Church in Charlotte
Courthouse where he was a faithful member until 1995. After moving to Louisa, on
December 3, 1995, he joined Galilee Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Otis
R. Spellman. On June 11, 2000, he was ordained as a Deacon at Galilee. He served
in this capacity faithfully for a total of 16 years and was a founding member of Men
of Integrity, which is now known as the Men of Promise. He also was a member of
the Galilee Senior Choir and served faithfully until his death.
Roger enjoyed speed drag racing, fishing, smoking meat and barbecuing. He loved
the time spent with his wife, children and most of all his time with the grandchildren.
With devotion to God, prayer and great wisdom, he set a personal standard and
worked to provide the absolute best that he could for his family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents,
Henry & Mariah Gaines and his maternal grandparents, Jacob & Annie Henry, all of
whom lived in Charlotte Courthouse, VA. His oldest daughter, Lorenda G. Jones also
preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Kimberly Walker Gaines of Louisa,
VA; his loving youngest daughter, Whitley G. Hughes (Justin) of Blue Ridge Shores,
VA; grandchildren: Mariah Gaines, Seigyn & Laila Hughes of Blue Ridge Shores, VA
and Joss Jones of Mineral, VA; son-in-law, Robert Jones of Mineral, VA; brothers:
Douglas Gaines(Vanessa) of Baltimore, MD; Leroy Gaines (Carolyn) of Charlotte
County, VA; James Gaines (Janice) of Woodbridge, VA; brother-in-law, Kenneth D.
Walker (Martha) of Madisonville, VA and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and
friends. We all thank God for his life and for all he has meant to us.
