Deacon James Henry Taylor, Sr., was born April 12, 1942 in Louisa, Virginia to the late Jerry and Edna Taylor. God called him home on July 19, 2023 at the home of his son, James Jr., in Smithfield, Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Charlie Lee Taylor.
Henry attended Louisa County Public Schools. After attending school at A.G. Richardson High School he moved to Washington, D.C. While living in Washington, he started working for the D.C. Bus Transit for many years. Later he left the Transit Company and branched out on his own. He purchased a Semi-trailer and went in business for himself traveling all over the country. His last employment was with Sheehy Automotive in Richmond, Virginia transporting cars until he retired.
He was baptized at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Upon returning back to Virginia, Henry reinstated his membership. He was a faithful member attending church school and church regularly. He was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and the Young Adult Choir. Under the Pastorate of Reverend Roger Jones he was ordained as a Trustee and a Deacon. He was Chairperson of the Deacon's Ministry for several years.
Henry enjoyed spending time with his family, the children in Mae's Day Care, and his dog, Coco. Coco was his best friend because everywhere Henry went Coco was always with him except going to church. He loved driving regardless of the type of vehicle or the distance, He was an avid fan of his two favorite teams from Washington, D.C.: the Commanders (Redskins) football team and the Wizards basketball team.
He leaves cherished and precious memories to his devoted wife of twenty –two years, Onedia Taylor; one daughter: Nikema Davis of Newport News; three sons: Bishop James Henry, Jr. (Barbara) of Smithfield, Eric Johnson (Joy) of Newport News; Gregory Johnson (Nikki) of Mineral; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two special god-daughters: Kendall Seabury and Kiara Jackson; one brother: Jerry Taylor of Hyattsville, MD; one aunt: Sadie Johnson of Mineral; three brothers-in-law: Charlie Shelton (Gertrude), of Richmond, David Shelton (Emma) of Henrico, Tony Shelton of Mineral; nine sisters- in – law: Sarah Smith (Meredith), and Louise Langhorne (Walter) of Goochland, Eva Shelton, Margie Shelton (Tim), and Joslyn Shelton of Mineral, Doris Tomes, of Louisa, Arlean Shelton of Richmond, Joyce Johnson (Anthony) of Chesterfield, Loretta Taylor of Suffolk; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, two devoted: Joe Hackney, Marshall Hackney and friends, one devoted Brenda Taylor.
