David Louis Augustus Quarles departed this life on June 28, 2015 at his home surrounded by family. Louis was born in Kent's Store, Virginia on May 11, 1931 to the late Roy and Florence Quarrels-Hawkins.

As a young boy, he joined Byrd Grove Baptist Church. His education commenced at Abrams School in VA, and he later moved to Washington, DC and graduated from Phelps Vocational High School where he learned Masonry. He owned and operated his construction company, Louisa Quarrels Masonry in Washington, DC. He arrived in New Jersey in 1955, where he continued his business, that later became Louis Quarrels Custom Fireplaces of which he operated for over 50 years.

Louis was a remarkable man with a great sense of humor who enjoyed life, people and family. He was a man of many talents and interests including hunting, playing his guitar, riding his Harley, bowling, gardening and most of all cutting his grass on his tractor. His love for bowling started as a young man working to reset the pins manually. He came a champion league bowler and always saved his winnings to this very day. He had a remarkable engineering mind and would invent technical tools and devices. He also took great pleasure in growing his garden and invited people to pick vegetables for themselves. He was known as the "Green Grocer". He was an expert tailor and made his own overcoat. He danced the "father's waltz" six times at the Debutante Cotillion leaving his family with fond memories to cherish.

He was widely known and greatly respected for his superb craftsmanship. It was not only his life's work, it was his true passion and greatest pleasure. The joy he had for building was demonstrated by the home he built for his family. The lessons learned from his hard work ethic will be cherished by many.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rose Vaughan Quarles and daughter, Veronica Quarles; two brothers, Francis and Alphonso Hawkins and sister, Janie Wytch.

He leaves to cherish his memory: children, David Louis Proctor (Elanora), Patricia Knox, Paula Quarles , all of Washington, DC, David Louis Quarles, Jr, Theresa Quarles Branson of Houston, Texas, Vanessa Quarles, Kenneth Quarles (Judy) of North Carolina, Daviena Quarles, Michele White-Fowles (Michael) and Berniena Q.
