Cleolive Quarles Cavanaugh departed this life on March 30, 2017 at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia. The daughter of Charles Ellis Quarles and Tessie Adele Timberlake Quarles, Mrs. Cavanaugh was born on November 18,1932.

Mrs. Cavanaugh received her early education in Louisa County Public Schools and went on to obtain a Bachelor's degree in education from Virginia Union University. Upon completion of her studies, Cleolive Cavanaugh worked for Fluvanna County Schools. She enjoyed a successful career as an elementary school teacher in the Fluvanna school system that spanned more than thirty years.

As an educator, Mrs. Cavanaugh was an active participant in many educational and civic organizations. These include membership in the Fluvanna Teachers' Association, the Virginia Education Association, and the National Education Association (NEA); participation as a founding member in the local chapter of The Association For The Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), affiliation with the local NAACP, and membership in the Order of the Eastern Star.

At an early age, Cleolive accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, was baptized, and joined County Line Baptist Church, in Goochland, Virginia. Her commitment to Christ was solid and
enduring and she remained a faithful and active member in her church, until illness limited her attendance and participation. Owing to fervent pursuit of her faith, Mrs. Cavanaugh was constantly involved in efforts that sustained and advance the work of the Gospel. In addition to her consistent involvement in her home church (County Line), Ms. Cavanaugh supported the work of her husband of 49 years, the beloved and honored Reverend Walter S. Cavanaugh. She thoroughly enjoyed her work with him as a co-laborer and First Lady of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Mineral, Virginia and St. Thomas Baptist Church in Bumpass, Virginia. She served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and constantly developed curriculum and programs, and arranged outings for children in her congregations. And if that was not enough, she faithfully supported her brother Bishop C. Ellis Quarles' ministry at Zion Freewill Baptist Church in Washington, DC. To say that Mrs. Cavanaugh was passionate in her faith and the work of the Church is an understatement. Her faith was the center of her life and she committed to a lifestyle of fellowship, Bible Study, prayer, and fasting. She endeavored to be faithful and encouraged her nieces and nephews to "run hard" in their individual spiritual journeys.

Mrs. Cavanaugh really enjoyed children. Not only did she impact many young lives as a public and Sunday school teacher, Cleolive Cavanaugh constantly engaged with children. She frequently observed, commented, and made helpful recommendations concerning the development of the children added to the family. She was intensely concerned with their growth and development and provided activities and gifts for their joy and development. Mrs. Cavanaugh's life recalls the scriptures that speak of the childless woman being nevertheless enriched (Isaiah 54:1- 3 and Psalm 113:9). She was both blessed and a blessing.

Cleolive Cavanaugh's stated hobby was shopping and it became the basis of family jokes, which she herself participated in with amusement. Her hobby was engaged in her gift giving and expressed in the attention that she gave to her attire, decoration of her classrooms, and her home. Her love of ornamentation and adornment was especially obvious as she lavishly decorated for Christmas, embellishing both the interior and exterior of her home with items that grandly celebrated the Birth of Jesus. Though quiet and demure, Cleolive Cavanaugh had flair and panache, and she was not shy about exhibiting it.

Cleolive Cavanaugh was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Ellis Quarles and Tessie Sutton, her sisters, Louise Quarles and Lorraine Lumpkins Whitaker, her brother Charles Ellis Quarles, Jr. , her beloved husband, Walter S. Cavanaugh, a niece, Donna Quarles Knight and a Great Nephew, David Adalberto Arenciba. What joy they surely know to receive her in their company now!

Cleolive leaves many to cherish her memory. Among them are her devoted nephew, Charles Ellis Quarles, III (Louisa, Virginia), her niece, Linda Quarles Arencibia (Petersburg, Virginia), sisters-in-law, Signora Herbert and Roberta Cavanaugh, brother-in-law, Delando Burdell Cavanaugh, many great nieces and nephews, and her beloved community of friends.
