Deaconess Catherine Mary Jackson was born on April 4, 1921, in Bumpass, Virginia to the late Anna West.
Catherine joined the Mt. Hope Baptist Church at the age of 12. She has been a lifetime member and at her death was the oldest member. She was a lifelong member of the choirs at Mt. Hope and Mt. Olivet Baptist Churches and also served for more than 37 years as a Deaconess. She enjoyed the pampering and the special attention that she received from most of the members of Mt. Hope, especially the men.
Mrs. Catherine (better known as Cat) served most of her life as a servant of God by serving others. From the age of seven, little Catherine moved to what is known as "Jackson Farm Lane" to begin her career as a "caregiver" when Mr. Tom Woodson, the original landowner needed someone to care for his aging wife, Mrs. Alice. Catherine's daily duties began with her caring for her patient, milking their cows and then walking about 3 miles to school. Catherine also cared for community elders as she raised her 8 children and cared for many other children of the community.
She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Charles Jackson, Sr; three sons, Augusta, Randell & Charles Jr.; three daughters, Edith Jackson, Mary Bowles and Evan Jessie Hooker; one daughter-n-law, Margaret Jackson; four sons-n-law, Norman Bowles, Isaac Hooker, Robert Powell and Edward Johnson; one adopted son-n-law, Philip Mayo; one brother, Deacon James West; one brother-n-law, William Jackson and one sister-n-law, Helen Jackson.
Catherine leaves to cherish many loving memories: three daughters, Carrie Johnson of Richmond, VA, Pastor Sharon Roberts (Melvin), and Carolyn Powell of Bumpass, VA; a lifetime family member, Wilmer Chapman; eleven grandchildren, Grayland Perkins, Rickie Chapman, Janice Clarke, Rod (Crystal) Keisha Roberts, Demeka Butler (Wayne), LaTonya Robinson (Harold), Carolyn, Chris (Dawn), Cheryl and Angela Jackson; thirteen great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; devoted son-n-law, Deacon Melvin Roberts; two caring nephews, Pastor Ronald and Frank West; special neighbors and friends, Ms. Alma Mallory, Ms. Pattie Shanks, Morgan Toxie, Greg and Margie Cooney and Mrs. Mary Johnson and a host of other caring family and friends.
