Bertha Louise Barney , affectionately known as "Bert", was born on Thursday, November 2 nd , 1950 in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Her parents Mary Elizabeth Coleman and Albert M. Hackney both proceeded her in death. Bertha departed this life on the morning of Wednesday, March 22 nd , 2023 at the Acute Hospice Care Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Sister Barney moved to Mineral, VA at a young age where she attended and was baptized at Laurel Hill Baptist Church.  When she was not faithfully serving on the kitchen committee, she was known to sit on the second pew—cheerfully greeting everyone as she made her way to her seat each Sunday.  She loved the Lord and trusted in Him fully and remained a faithful member until her health began to decline.

She was educated at John J. Wright in Spotsylvania, VA. and A.G. Richardson High School in Louisa County. She began her career at Louisa Manufactory where she worked for 29 years before retiring.  She chose to rejoin the workforce at Technicolor in Ruckersville, Virginia and carpooled every day for several years with her daughter, her sister, Pearl and neighborhood friend, Patricia "Ree" Johnson. Bertha was always laughing and known on the job for cracking the best jokes.

On Saturday, January 27, 1968, Bertha married the love of her life, Thomas Howard Barney. They have been happily married for 55 years and from their union came two beautiful children: Pamela J. Barney and Tony T. Barney (Sheree). She has two granddaughters, Brittany N. Barney and Dariel Sandoval and one grandson, Christopher Dean. She was also blessed with one great-grandson, Karlos Johnson, Jr. who held a special place in her heart.

Bertha leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, children and grandchildren, eleven loving sisters: Pearl Coleman of Mineral, VA, Mary Ann Scott (Israel) of Waldorf, MD, Mary Jane Brobbey (Edward) of Fluvanna, VA, Eldora Faye James (Devin) of Fairmont Heights, MD, Elnora Mae White (George) of Woodbridge, VA, June Prim of Summerville, SC, Barbara Mitchell of McDonough, GA, Joyce Turner of Summerville, SC, Gloyce "Brenda" Hackney of Providence, RI, Carol Hackney of Cranston, RI, and Shirley Hackney-Samy of Bellingham, WA;  four amazing brothers: Benjamin Coleman (Sibyl) of Mineral, VA, David Coleman of Mineral, VA, Leon Coleman (Sullie) of Waldorf, MD, and Herbert Hackney of Conyers, GA.

She was a woman of grace and many hidden talents—Bert could literally tie the perfect bow but, she was best known for being an excellent cook. Some of her famous dishes include macaroni & cheese, potato salad, and seafood salad. Her homemade desserts like 'cherries in the snow' cake, apple-walnut cake and vanilla cake with lemon glaze were some of our family favorites.  Just like her spirit, her food was full of love and that was the secret ingredient to her delicious meals. Cookouts were held in her backyard every summer for decades. Bertha welcomed everyone into her home on Sundays after church for dinner or to watch the game. She enjoyed watching sports like basketball, boxing & football. Anyone who truly knew her could tell you that she was one of the biggest Dallas Cowboys fans around!

Many thanks to the staff members at UVa Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit, the Emily Couric Cancer Center and the Center for Acute Hospice Care for all their care, compassion and support.  The Barney and Coleman families would like to say a special thanks to all who have prayed and continue to share their great memories and kind words with us in our time of bereavement. Despite her health issues, Bertha Louise put on such a brave face that many were unaware of her private battles.  She fought the good fight and let her immediate family know that she had run her race.  The Lord said, "Well done, my good and faithful servant" and she went on to rest in her heavenly home where she will suffer no more. She will be dearly missed by a host of extended family, friends and neighbors whose lives she undoubtedly touched in her own special way.
