Bernice Elizabeth Quarles passed away suddenly Monday, November 25, 2013. Bernice was born November 16, 1924 in Gordonsville, VA to the late Robert and Betteen Quarles. She was the youngest of nine siblings, all whom preceded her in death.
She was educated in the Louisa County Public Schools, graduated from Virginia State College and received her Master's Degree from North York University. She retired from the D. C. School System where she taught school in D. C. and Fairfax County for 30 years.
Bernice joined Pleasant Plain Baptist Church at an early age where she worked tirelessly until her death. She was the treasurer of the church, a deaconess and represented her church for many events. She was also active in the Piedmont Baptist Association for many years. She loved to travel having traveled coast to coast and to many foreign countries.
Bernice leaves to cherish her memories: six nieces, Joan (Reginald) Brown, Gordonsville, VA, Barbara (Robert) Ragland, South Carolina, Linda Lewis, Gordonsville, VA, Felecia Stevens, Washington, D. C., Bernice Ervin, Philadelphia, PA and Betteen Anderson, Laurel, MD; five nephews, Melvin Quarles, Atlanta, GA, Harry Quarles, Gordonsville, VA, James (Mary) Paschall, Capital Heights, MD, Dwight Quarles and Dudley Quarles, Jr., all of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven great nieces, great-great nephews, great-great nieces, many neighbors and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, 2564 Lindsay Road, Gordonsville, VA with the Reverend Harold Solomon officiating. The family will receive friends at a wake service from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. when the service begins. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
