Audrey Lightfoot Smith was born on the spring day of April 22, 1914 in Scottsville, Virginia to John Jackson Lightfoot and Annette Carmen (Nettie) Cooper Lightfoot. She was the fifth child of twelve children.

Growing up on a farm there was always something to do. Hands were kept busy working with the land, animals, house and her siblings. Audrey spoke about her long walk to and from school where Mrs. Ollie Abrams was one of her teachers. She started working in Fork Union when she was nine years old. When she was seventeen, she left her home in Scottsville to try her luck in the big city of New York. Her life consisted of hard work and some playtime.

During the Great Depression the silent movies and newsreels were a welcome pastime and relief from the harsh reality gripping the country at that time. After surviving the Depression with its soup lines, rations and Jim Crow laws, her life led her to Benjamin Smith in holy matrimony. From this union there are three children: Thomas, John and Peggy as well as Benjamin's two older children Gertrude and Seay.

Audrey attended Union Baptist Church as a child and joined Thessalonia Church, Bronx, New York, in the 1930's. When she returned to Virginia in 1953, she joined the fellowship of New Fork Baptist Church where she remained as a devoted member until her death. Never giving in to the pains of age and disease, she ceaselessly pressed on to receive the prize of the high calling of God in Jesus Christ.

In addition to her children, Thomas, John and Peggy, Audrey leaves to cherish her well lived life: a brother James "Sonny" Lightfoot, 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2015 at New Fork Baptist Church 7 Peaceful Lane Palmyra, VA 22963.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2015 at New Fork Baptist Church Palmyra, VA. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
