IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arthur Samuel
Scales
August 23, 1938 – December 2, 2018
Reverend Arthur Samuel "Sam" Scales, 80, entered eternal peace on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, VA. Sam was born in Rockingham County, NC on August 23, 1938 to the late Salem Clark Scales and Minnie Galloway Scales.
Sam grew up in Eden, NC and attended Morehead High School where he proved to be a dynamic athlete, having been offered a scholarship in the sport of basketball. Sam however chose to serve his country and enlisted in the US Navy.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Sam settled in Washington, DC. There he began a career as a valet – an industry he worked in for 30+ years. In 1969, Sam was united in marriage to Margaret Graves and from this union one son, Arthur William, was born. Additionally, Sam assisted in raising his step-son Robert Ferbish.
Sam retired in 2001 and moved to Louisa, VA permanently. In Louisa, he assisted his cousin-in-law Pete in his upholstery business. When not assisting across the way, you could find him propped up in his favorite spot on the couch watching westerns on TV while the wood burning stove heated the house. Sam liked it warm so therefore that stove remained on the inferno setting all winter long.
Sam loved his family. Margaret was the love of his life. They enjoyed good times together but they particularly loved bowling. They loved it so much they eventually joined a senior league. Sam also shared a special bond with his only son Arthur "Bill". You could find these two snickering at inside jokes and reminiscing about family in Eden, NC
