I'M FREE
Without warning or elaborate fanfare, God, in His infinite wisdom, allowed His angels to take our beloved, Alice Bullock Houchens, from us on Tuesday night January 29, 2013. She left us so suddenly--without a final farewell or a sweet good-bye.
Our mother was born August 11, 1914 in Louisa County, Virginia. She was the fifth child of the late George and Angie Bullock. Her three sisters Seadora Griggs, Louise Johnson, Catherine Bullock and four brothers George Lee, Eddie, Mack D. and Lazrus Bullock; two granddaughters Linda Johnson and Ashley Christian; two great- grandsons Joshua Jackson and Hekeam Rice and four son-in-laws Isaac Ransom, Harold Anderson, Milton Johnson and Samuel Jackson all preceded her in death.
Our mother was baptized at a young age and became a member of the Rising Sun Baptist Church. She was the oldest member of the church at the time of her death. She attended Rising Sun until her health failed. Also, she loved to go around to different churches during revival time.
Alice leaves to cherish her memories her husband of 65 years Eugene L. Houchens, Jr, six daughters: Velma Johnson, Maude Ransom, Dorothy (Salt) Rice of Philadelphia, PA, Julia Jackson, and Angie E. Anderson of Mineral, VA and Frances M. (Sylvester) Smith of Louisa, VA, nineteen grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren, two sister-in-laws: Hannah Hunter and Dorothy Henson of Mineral, VA and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Her caregiver and niece Catherine H. Jackson (whom she loved dearly), and devoted family friends Leroy Sawyer, Joe Sawyer, and Emma Butler.
Our mother has gone to join her parents, sibling and friends Elise Sawyer, Elizabeth and Albert Butler, Sam and Rebecca Hunter, Lena Hunter, Edmond and Sarah Henson and Mary Butler.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 3,2013 at Rising Sun Baptist Church 6829 Fredericks Hall Road Mineral,VA 23117 with Rev. Arthur Lee officiating and Rev. Frederick Sales eulogist. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
