Alfred Silvester Fortune Sr , also known as – Big Al, Poppi, Ala, Al Capone – and Black, 82, of Louisa, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on October 16, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born and raised in Louisa, Alfred accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Foster Creek Baptist Church.
Alfred dedicated many years of service to the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 2005. Known for his strong work ethic, friendly nature, and quiet spirit.

If you knew Alfred , you remember his generous spirit. He was a proud Dallas Cowboys fan, an avid hunter, and—before his health declined—the life of every gathering as the unofficial bartender.

On September 5, 1964, Alfred was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, the late Lucille Marie Bishop. Their beautiful union of 48 years was blessed with four children: Dennis, Calvin Sr., Sharon, and Alfred Jr.

Alfred was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Marie Fortune; his son, Calvin Eugene Fortune, Sr.; his granddaughter, Shanice Marie Fortune; his parents, Lula and Ivory Fortune, Sr.; and five brothers: Wayne, Brodas, William, Ivory Jr., and Bernette Fortune.

He leaves to cherish his memory to three devoted children: Dennis Edward, Sharon Elizabeth, and Alfred Silvester Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Carol-Ann Fortune; two sisters, Elsie Mason (Steven) and Mary Garris; and one brother, Mark Fortune, all of Louisa, VA. Alfred also leaves behind nine grandchildren—Tyesha, Montreal, Patrick, Terelle, Calvin Jr., Kenneth, Shakayla, Katrell, and Alfred III. — as well as nine great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.

He is also remembered by seven sister-in-laws, one brother-in-law, and his closest lifelong friends—Albert Grooms, Freddie Harris, Thomas Eldridge, Floyd Fortune, and a special friend and caretaker Brad Wood – along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

Alfred's legacy of love will forever live on through all who knew and loved him.
